18th Sunday of the year. Year A
This week’s
reflection from Fr Henry
In this Sunday’s Gospel. we see Jesus, who did
not do many miracles in Nazareth because of lack of
faith, performing miracles for the crowds because
of their faith. For Matthew, faith is confidence in
Jesus power. The crowds’ faith in Jesus is implied
by the fact that they do the same things that others.
inspired by faith have done They bring to him all
those who were sick like the paralytic man. They believe,
that they can be healed by touching the fringe of
Jesus garment, like the woman who touched his garment.
Their faith in Jesus contrasts with the little faith
of the disciples, who appear to lack the same confidence.
The miracle of the loaves and fishes lends itself
to several other impressions. It recalls the exodus
theme, where Israel is fed in the wilderness. The
abundance may signify the presence of the Messianic
age and salvation. The parallels with the narrative
of the Lord’s Supper may suggest that Jesus
is the source of our spiritual nourishment. The feeding
of the five thousand with the excess collected in
twelve baskets indicates the abundant supply of all
peoples. The Eucharist however, will offer bread for
all humankind. The story also bears Jesus’ compassion
for the needy as he does not let them go away hungry.
Thank You. Fr Henry would
like to thank Fr Martin and all the Parishioners of
St Gertrud’s Church again for the warm welcome
and nice stay for the past month. He leaves St Gertrude’s
on Tuesday 5th August to go to St Mary’s West
Croydon.. He has enjoyed his stay and is indeed very
grateful for the opportunity offered once again to
minister and interact with the parishioners. He would
like to thank in a special way all those who hosted
him for the meals and dinners. Not forgetting all
your other gifts. Conversations, prayers and life
experiences you shared with me Be assured of his prayers
for all of you and the Parish and please do remember
him in yours and God willing see you again next summer
